Description

Tianzi

The title of Tianzi literally means “Son of Heaven” and was used by many sovereign rulers of China regardless of their rank. The term first emerged during the Zhou Dynasty and is based on the concept of the Mandate of Heaven. This concept should not be confused with the European notion of divine right, as it legitimizes rule only as long as it is good or successful. The title Tianzi also symbolized the claim to rule over the Tianxia (literally “all under heaven”), meaning the entire world.

Jìnyáng was built in 497 BCE and boasts a history of over 2500 years. Known today as Taiyuan, it is the capital of Shanxi Province in the People’s Republic of China and is situated at an altitude of 780 meters on the Fen River. The Jinci Temple complex in Taiyuan has been listed as a monument of the People’s Republic of China since 1961.
